The rowdiest event of the PGA Tour season is here. The Waste(d) Management Phoenix Open. I'm not sure if the players on the Tour are getting better, or that better players are attracted to this event. But it seems that this field gets deeper and deeper every year.
I like to think that players want to be part of the party that happens in the stands on 16, and want to recreate what Tiger did here years ago...
The event started at Phoenix CC in 1932, and has been played at TPC Scottsdale since 1987. Hideki Matsuyama is the two time defending champion, looking to become the first 3 time winner of the event. Hideki has beaten Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson in playoffs in the last two wins, will he go for a 3 peat in playoff wins and consecutive playoffs on the PGA Tour this season.
If you would like to listen to my new proposed playoff format for PGA Tour events, listen here.
TPC Scottsdale plays host to the guys this week. It's a Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish design that plays to a par 71 at 7,266 yards.
The hardest hole on the golf course is the par 3, 12th hole with a stroke average of 3.2. The easiest hole on the golf course is the par 5, 13th hole, averaging 4.6. Everyone will be watching the 16th hole, a short par 3 with a stadium that seats 20,000 people making it the largest congregation of fans on one hole on the PGA Tour.
The course is relatively easy, as the winning score over the last 5 year has been better than -14 each year. Look for players that make a lot of birdies to have success here.
Solid Bets: Hideki Matsuyama, Phil Mickelson, Ryan Moore
Dark Horses: Kyle Stanley, Brenden Steele, Scott Piercy
My Pick: HIDEKI!! Two time defending champ on a hot streak of good play... Hard not to pick him.
